About Me
My name’s Guan. I’m an Australian-Chinese writer with Malaysian heritage, based in Sydney’s Inner West. Come visit! We have great coffee.
I’m a writer of science fiction, fantasy and sometimes horror. My work typically deals with themes of myths within new contexts, diaspora, immigrant identity and belonging, and having watched too many kung fu movies as a kid.
My work has been featured in Year’s Best Fantasy Vol 2, LeVar Burton Reads, the Locus Recommended Reading List and multiple times on the Reactor Must Read Short Speculative Fiction list. In 2023, I was selected in the Diverse Writers mentorship program with Writing NSW, under Eugen Bacon. In 2021, my WIP novel Chu and Sons Most Excellent Monster Hunting Concern was one of two Highly Commended awards in the Wheeler Centre’s Next Chapter program.
When I’m not writing, I’m trying to convince computers to do magic via keyboard, watching battle rap, playing indie games or fighting games, messing around with TTRPGs/board games, or watching a heist movie.
Here’s a succinct bio mostly for me to copy and paste:
Guan Un is an Australian-Chinese writer of speculative fiction based in Sydney. His work has been featured in LeVar Burton Reads, Year’s Best Fantasy Vol 2, Strange Horizons and more. A former theology student and luggage salesman, he lives with his family, a dog named after a tiger, and a non-sentient sourdough starter. You can find him at @thisisguan.bsky.social or guanun.com.
Here’s an even smaller bio:
Guan Un is making it up as he goes along.
My name is pronounced basically how it looks, like Gwun or the middle part of iguana.
You can follow me on Bluesky if you want. Sometimes I’m on there and then sometimes I’m not sure how to participate in the social media flood while remaining a person.
If there’s anything else you want to know, write me a note.
